A Token of Appreciation

Herr Rudolf Flume, a prominent German watchmaker and goldsmith living in Berlin during the blockade, gifted the Combined Air Lift Task Force this ornate pocket watch. He asked that the watch be presented to a distinguished Airman supporting the airlift as a symbol of gratitude on behalf of all Berliners trapped behind the Soviet blockade.

Major General William Tunner held a ceremony at Tempelhof AB on August 13, 1948, where he presented the antique gold watch to Lieutenant James Lykins. At the time, Lt Lykins had flown more resupply missions into Berlin from his base at Rhein-Main than any other pilot.
