British recognition for veterans of the Berlin Airlift.

Recognition for those who served in the Berlin Airlift was a difficult question in the UK. The British Government decided not to create a medal for those who participated, but a parade was held in London on 7 December 1949. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth inspected RAF personnel at Buckingham Palace before a parade through London and lunch at the Guildhall. General William Tunner, for his role in commanding airlift operations, was made an honorary Companion of the Order of the Bath. In 2014 a British Government review ruled that ‘The General Service Medal 1918-62 with clasp ‘Berlin Airlift’ will be awarded for at least one day’s service to all aircrew, RAF and civilians who took part in the Berlin Airlift operation from 25 June 1948 to 6 October 1949 inclusive.’
