Flying in bad weather

The arrival of winter, 1948, brought with it increasingly bad weather – and this inevitably had an impact on the Berlin Airlift. Fog, low cloud, low temperatures, wind, rain and snow all made safe and efficient flying more difficult. Some of the worst weather was experienced on 30 November 1948, when only ten flights reached Berlin. The reduced weight of supplies reaching the city was a serious concern to the western allies.
