The Berlin Airlift of 1948-1949, the first conflict of the Cold War between Western nations and the Soviet Union, was of immense historical significance and continues to have undiminished relevance and impact today.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Airlift in 2023 and 2024, the Royal Air Force Museum, the Bundeswehr Military History Museum, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, and the Allied Museum have joined forces to create this digital exhibition. Throughout the anniversary period, multiple posts were published weekly on a specially created website to paint a multifaceted picture of the events that took place 75 years ago.
The focus of this exhibition deliberately shifts away from the political dimension, instead highlighting the people, places and objects behind the events. Drawing inspiration from the historical circumstances, this exhibition reflects various perspectives: 4 museums, 4 curators, 4 viewpoints - united by a common goal. The aim is to provide visitors with a vivid and timeless portrayal of the events of that era.
The Berlin Airlift is more relevant today than ever. It`s significance extends far beyond the borders of Berlin and continues to symbolize the spirit of international cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis.
