RAF transport aircraft: Avro York

The Avro York was a British transport aircraft developed during the Second World War. It featured the same wings, engines, undercarriage and tail as the famous Lancaster bomber, with a new fuselage designed to carry passengers or cargo. Capable of carrying around nine tons, the York was used by the RAF throughout the Berlin Airlift, flying a wide range of cargoes into the blockaded city.

An Avro York can be seen at the RAF Museum’s Midlands site.
