The Women’s Royal Air Force in the Berlin Airlift

The Women’s Royal Air Force, newly formed in February 1949, immediately took on its first operational role in the Berlin Airlift. Women fulfilled a range of roles, including work as wireless operators and aircraft mechanics. Air Commandant Dame Felicity Peake, the last Commandant of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and the first Commandant of the Women’s Royal Air Force, visited the women’s detachment at RAF Gatow during the Berlin Airlift, and was impressed by their high morale.
